Berry Scoping
I gave a guided tour to some folks on a local trail along the woodlands and prairies on Friday afternoon - about a 2 1/2 mile hike. Along the way I identified a number of wild edibles and instructed them concerning their uses.
It's now time to be scoping out the berries that are in bloom, so you can come back when they're ready to eat. The wild blackberries and elderberries are starting to bloom now, the gooseberries and chokecherries are fruiting, and wild strawberries in the pastures are blooming. Wild grapes are setting on in record numbers I haven't seen in years! Get out there and map out the free food! For jam and jelly producers, it looks to be a great season.
