Gooseberries & Chokecherries
Gooseberries and chokecherries are blooming in the woodlands now, so it's a great time to get out there with a field guide and identify these wild edibles. It's not time to harvest them, but it is time to find out where they are. A little road time, trail time, or hiking will let you map out their whereabouts for later reference.
Wild onions and wild garlic greens are available right now as well. And look for wild asparagus - it's out there too! Old house sites (get permission first!) often have old grown up beds of asparagus that are still there, and some has naturalized into road ditches and elsewhere. Let's get munching on free foods!
Wild violets are blooming now, making them easy to find and add to fresh salads.
Wood sorrel is a nice sour lemony addition to a salad as well, and it is coming on fast now, as well.
